Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket are the main towns in this part of rural Suffolk. Both have seen substantial expansion in recent decades, with much recently built private housing. There is Labour support, particularly in Stowmarket, but the comfortable villages, together with the generally genteel aspect of Bury St Edmunds, all go to make up an essentially safe Conservative seat.
