Carmarthen East and Dinefyr is rural and agricultural with no significant towns, except in the east in the former coalmining towns of Ammanford and Brynamman. It is also one of only five Welsh seats with a majority of Welsh speakers, and the only one of these that is not currently held by Plaid Cymru. Labour held on in 1992 but with under 37 per cent of the vote. This Labour vote, concentrated in the former mining areas, should be fairly solid, but with as low a polling share as this, nothing can be taken for granted. Labour will expect to hold, but will have to work hard.
