Carshalton and Wallington, on the Surrey fringes of Greater London, gives every impression of being safe Tory suburbia. However, the Liberals, and now the Liberal Democrats, have a long history of strong intervention in the Borough of Sutton. They now control the local council and harbour serious ambitions of taking this parliamentary seat. Objectively, a Conservative lead of 10,000 votes looks insurmountable, but this is almost exactly the same as the vote for Labour. A further anti-Tory swing, plus serious tactical voting, could just see the Lib Dems home.
