Clwyd South is a large and rural constituency in North Wales. The electorate is scattered in isolated hamlets and farms, or clustered in small towns and villages in the valleys, such as the very Welsh Llangollen on the A5 trunk road to Holyhead. Ruabon, to the east, is more industrial in character. Rural Wales lacks the strong allegiance to the Conservatives that would be found in similar constituencies in England. The electoral balance is clearly in Labour's favour, with local interventions by both the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru limiting the ability of the second place Conservatives to mount an effective challenge.
