This is an island constituency. Argyll inlcudes Mull, Jura and Islay, as well as smaller and even more remote islands like Coll, Tiree and Colonsay. Argyll also includes vast tracks of moorland on the mainland. The only towns of any size are Oban, Dunoon and Rothesay. Lib Dem MP, Ray Michie, has retained this seat since 1987, but in 1992 her majority was only 2,600. One source of danger may come from the SNP. Over 7 per cent of residents speak Gaelic, the third highest proportion in Scotland.
