Cornwall North is remembered by many as the seat that was held by Liberal MP, John Pardoe, prior to a Conservative victory here in 1979. For decades the rural and resort towns of this part of Cornwall have seen tightly fought battles between the Liberals, now the Liberal Democrats, and the Conservatives. Successive elections have seen some very high electoral turn-outs, and a Labour vote squeezed to well below 10 per cent. Liberal Democrat, Paul Tyler, won the last battle in 1992, and will hope to return to Westminster again, but this will require that tactical voting by natural Labour supporters continues to be maximised.
