The population is moderately affluent with many well-paid skilled workers, and the residential make-up is fairly diverse. The strong traditional allegiance to Labour among workers in the motor industry proved sufficiently resilient to keep Labour in control in this part of the Midlands throughout the Thatcher years, and the seat should now be seen as safe for Labour.
