Coventry North West is nearly as safe for Labour as the city's North East constituency. This is the home of Coventry's motor industry, and Labour MP Geoffrey Robinson, a successful businessman and former managing director of Jaguar Cars, is very well matched to this constituency. The population is moderately affluent with many well-paid skilled workers, and the residential make-up is fairly diverse. The strong traditional allegiance to Labour among workers in the motor industry proved sufficiently resilient to keep Labour in control in this part of the Midlands throughout the Thatcher years, and the seat should now be seen as safe for Labour.
