The very traditional industrial and working-class town of Crewe is joined to more affluent parts of rural Cheshire in the constituency of Crewe and Nantwich. Although Labour MP Gwyneth Dunwoody has never enjoyed the big majorities of some of her colleagues, she held on to her seat throughout the 1980s. Labour support here is very loyally traditional and substantially resisted the attractions of Thatcherism. The constituency remains socially divided, but the balance continues to favour Labour.
