The East Midlands city of Derby has two parliamentary constituencies, neither of which ranks as particularly safe. Derby South is the seat of Margaret Beckett, formerly Labour's acting leader after the death of John Smith, but she won by only 421 in 1983 and 1,500 in 1987. Derby North is the more Conservative seat, held since 1983 by the Conservative Greg Knight.
As might be expected, North contains the city's best residential areas, in the Allestree and Derby wards, but also many mixed neighbourhoods such as Spondon and Chaddesden. In 1992 it returned a result very similar to that across the whole country, at least as far as Conservative and Labour are concerned. Labour were about 7.5 per cent behind Knight, very similar to their deficit nationally. If they obtain a national lead in 1997, they should be able to take Derby North back for the first time in 14 years.
