This was for may years a safe Labour seat owing to its long-term reliance on coalmining and the nearby heavy industry of Chesterfield and Sheffield, but massive new private housing developments and an influx of affluent commuters have swung the seat to the Tories over the past 20 years - in 1987, the Labour majority was reduced to 3,720. Parts of the constituency remain solidly Labour - it includes rebellious Clay Cross - and Labour's Harry Barnes will probably hold it this time, but the long-term prospects are uncertain.
