Rural West Derbyshire was for many years considered the only true Conservative stronghold in he county. The Tories can still rely on it, but they have had a few scary moments. They lost to Labour in 1945, and only retained the seat in a 1986 by-election by exactly 100 votes over the Lib Dems. Since then, however, Liberal Democrat support has faded, and apart from isolated Lib Dem pockets and Labour strength in Belper and Wirksworth, the seat is solidly Tory. Conservative Patrick McLoughlin - surprisingly, for a Tory MP, he is a former miner - will have a comfortable stroll back to the Commons.
