The residential resort towns of Exmouth, Sidmouth, Seaton and Budleigh Salterton give Devon East one of the most elderly electorates in the country and one of the Conservatives' safer seats in the South West of England. The Liberal Democrats do not make as great an impact here as in some other parts of the region, and merely achieve a respectable second place, some distance behind the Tories, who can view this as a safe seat.
