The old woollen industry towns of West Yorkshire have an independence of spirit which makes them less inclined to vote Labour than their traditional industrial heritage might suggest. Dewsbury is one of several such constituencies which will be closely fought. Labour won in 1992 and on the slightly revised boundaries will expect to win in 1997. However, Labour MP Ann Taylor will never enjoy the comfortable majorities enjoyed by those colleagues in nearby areas that have an industrial tradition of coal rather than wool.
