Dorset North's pretty countryside, peppered with solid little market towns such as Shaftesbury and Blandford Forum, looks as if it ought to be safely Conservative, and the Tories did indeed poll over 50 per cent of the vote here, on slightly different boundaries, in 1992. However, the Liberal Democrats have been doing very well here in recent local elections, and, although it will not be easy, they must have hopes of achieving a breakthrough here, if they are to see advance in their strength in the House of Commons.
