In 1992 the rural border constituency of Dumfries, in the south west of Scotland, was won by the retiring Conservative MP, Sir Hector Munro, with just 43 per cent of the votes cast. However, with both the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Nationalists picking up over 10 per cent of the votes apiece, it will be very difficult for the second place Labour candidate to win the seat, even in a bad year for the Tories, as 1997 seems destined to be.
