The city of Dundee and, specifically the constituency of Dundee East, has a recently strong SNP tradition, and Labour only won the seat back from the Nationalists in 1987. Running against the general trend in Scotland, the SNP vote actually fell back further in 1992, and it could be perceived that Dundee East was returning to the more typical Labour allegiance of such Scottish industrial seats. Dundee East does contain some prosperous residential communities but, overall, local authority housing estates predominate. Labour's John McAllion should consider himself safe.
