The mid-Buckinghamshire market town of Aylesbury expanded rapidly from the 1950s onwards and has a vibrant light industrial and service economy. In local elections the Liberal Democrats do quite well within the town itself, but the surrounding affluent rural villages are Conservative. The Liberal Democrats merely manage a poor second to the Tories in general elections, who can expect to hold the seat.
