Created in 1983 as an amalgamation of two former constituencies, this is a rock-solid Labour seat in this most Labour of all counties. The old Chester-le-Street seat, most of which is in this constituency, has been held by Labour since 1906 with an 8,000 majority even in their wilderness year of 1931, when they barely won 50 seats in the whole country. Labour right-winger Giles Radice can count on the continuing loyalty of his constituents.
