This rugged constituency of almost brutal industrial scenery includes a number of isolated coalmining towns around the upper Wear valley. The mining has gone, but traditional party loyalties remain, and have now been reinforced by the inclusion of the ex-steel town of Consett. This seat is a rarity - a low population density Labour seat, but the party's dominance is quite real, and their Hilary Armstrong will easily be returned to a seat that runs in her family.
