Although the City of Durham is an administrative centre, with an ancient cathedral city and a distinguished university, it lies within a county that has strong traditions of coalmining and religious non-conformity, and this cultural identity leads the constituency's electorate towards Labour. The seat extends beyond the city to take in a number of Labour-voting former coalmining communities, which more than counterbalances some areas of both Conservative and Liberal Democrat strength within the City of Durham itself. This should be safe for Labour's Gerry Steinberg.
