Erith and Thamesmead is a new seat carved out of the former Woolwich and Erith and Crayford constituencies. The Woolwich end saw a battle between Labour and the last remaining SDP MP in 1992, which was won by Labour, while Erith and Crayford was a Conservative/Labour marginal, but also won by Labour. Having seen off the SDP, Labour's position should now be stronger in this east London corridor to the south of the Thames, and Labour should hold safely.
