The high point of Thatcherism saw the Labour majority in this east London seat reduced to levels where it almost looked marginal. The Labour vote bounced back in 1992 and now looks safe for Labour's Margaret Hodge, until 1992 leader of the then 'socialist' Labour council in Islington. Essentially working-class, with strong East End roots, the electorate here may be considered to have returned to its natural fold.
