The populist Conservative Home Secretary, Michael Howard, holds the unchanged seat of Folkestone and Hythe. This comfortable Kent coastal constituency includes some interesting industrial and commercial features in the nuclear power station at Dungeness and the entrance to the Channel Tunnel, as well as the resort and port town of Folkestone. The Liberal Democrats do quite well in local elections and are the challengers to the Tories in parliamentary elections, but the Conservative lead looks unassailable.
