Glasgow Cathcart, on the southern fringe of the city, lacks the overwhelmingly proletarian aspect of some of the city's other constituencies. There are some of Glasgow's most comfortable and respectable residential areas, but also poorer areas of inner-city and overspill council housing. When the seat was more tightly drawn around the former, it was held by the Conservatives, but as Glasgow's declining population has led boundaries to be expanded, the constituency has slipped away from Tory Party control, and now looks safe for Labour.
