Glasgow Pollok, in the south west of the city, is another Glasgow seat where council estates and a traditionally Labour-inclined electorate predominate. There have been major boundary changes here, but in 1992 Labour was challenged from the left in the former Pollock constituency by a candidate standing for Scottish Militant Labour, who attracted the votes of nearly one in five electors. If this was the consequence of a certain Labour complacency about their invincibility in urban Glasgow, the party is likely to have learnt its lesson, and is likely to reassert its ascendancy more effectively this time to maintain a safe majority.
