The Hampshire town of Gosport, across Portsmouth Harbour from Portsmouth, is first and foremost a naval community. The social profile is one of the most homogeneously lower middle-class in the country. The relative paucity of very affluent residential areas belies the fact that this remains a safe Conservative seat, a fact which must be attributed to the area's dependence on the military and defence industries.
