Although the very southern fringe of Hackney South and Shoreditch is sometimes billed as one of the most 'happening' neighbourhoods in London, with a small artistic community moving into loft and warehouse conversions, the overall complexion of this seat is that of London's most deprived inner-city areas, with high levels of public housing, single-parent families and unemployment. The Liberal Democrats pick up votes in local elections in the south of the constituency, where more traditional working-class Londoners, rather than families of immigrant origin, predominate, but overall this is a very safe Labour seat.
