The town of Havant, on the outskirts of Portsmouth, saw significant growth in the 1950s and 1960s and there are significant council estates here, but the overall pattern is one of moderate affluence with a fairly dynamic local economy. Labour does far worse than the socio-economic profile might suggest and came home in third place in 1992. The seat looks disarmingly safe for the Conservatives.
