Historically, the New Town of Hemel Hempstead has been relatively fertile ground for the Labour Party, but the party's challenge to the incumbent Conservative diminished significantly in the 1980s. Many of the employed and skilled council house tenants became owner-occupiers, and the economy remains very dynamic. Just as many first-time visiting motorists lose their way when they hit Hemel's famous 'magic roundabout', with its simultaneous clockwise and counter-clockwise gyrations with intervening mini-roundabouts, so Labour have lost their way. There may be roundabouts, but no swings large enough to challenge the Tory grip on Hemel Hempstead, short of a total meltdown of the Conservative vote.
