Centred on Worksop and containing a number of other former coalmining communities in this part of north Nottinghamshire is a safe Labour seat. In the 1980s, when this area backed the breakaway Union of Democratic Miners against Arthur Scargill's National Union of Miners, it may have looked as if Labour loyalties were vulnerable. However, the UDM proved no defence for the coalminers and the local pits have now closed. Although there are Conservative voters hereabouts, especially in the more rural north and east, the former mining area dominates and Labour is safe.
