The Hertfordshire towns of Hitchin and Harpenden are some distance apart in this new constituency. They are located on different transport corridors heading south towards London and there is little cross country identification to link the towns socially. Harpenden is the more affluent of the two. Hitchin, although more mixed, is at least comfortably well-off. The intervening countryside is populated with prosperous little communities and dispersed hamlets. The Liberal Democrats may hope for second place, but the Tories will romp home to a safe victory.
