This may be the least urbanised of all Tyne and Wear seats, but that does little to alter its conformity to the overall Labour hegemony in this part of North-East England. Made up of parts of the 'New Town' of Washington plus many former mining communities of the old Durham coalfield, this is hardly surprising, and this area will spring no surprises in 1997.
