Labour's deputy leader, John Prescott, has represented Hull East since 1970. The eastern area of what is more correctly termed 'Kingston upon Hull' is pretty solidly working-class, with some extensive estates of local authority housing. This is a very traditional Labour seat, with few non-white electors, and a history of dockland and industrial employment. Labour will retain its parliamentary monopoly of Hull seats.
