Hull West and Hessle contains much of the city centre and the old fishing docks together with a variety of working-class residential areas, comprising both streets of terraced housing and council estates. To this solidly Labour mix, the Boundary Commission, has, not without protest, added the distinct small town of Hessle, to the west of the city, which has both Conservative and Liberal Democrat electors. This is insufficient to pose any threat to Labour's expectation of holding Hull West and Hessle, along with Hull's two other seats, at the general election.
