Don Touhig was elected Labour MP for Islwyn at the by-election in 1995, replacing former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, who had been appointed to the European Commission. This constituency lies at the heart of the former South Wales coalfield, and these traditional working-class communities remain staunch supporters of the Labour Party. They can be guaranteed to continue to supply Labour with an impregnable majority.
