The Scottish Nationalists have slowly been eroding Labour's majority in this traditional industrial seat to the south of Glasgow. A further 7 per cent swing from Labour to the SNP would see the Nationalists register a famous victory. Past experience suggests that the SNP are more likely to secure such an advance against a Labour Party in power, rather than in opposition, at Westminster, but Kilmarnock and Loudoun will be an interesting seat to watch to get a measure of Nationalist fortunes in 1997.
