The Scottish town of Kirkcaldy on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, formerly both a coal port and a centre for the linoleum industry, now has a more diversified industrial economy. The constituency of this name also includes some smaller towns on the coast as well as some inland villages. There is a strong Labour tradition throughout the area, and although the Scottish Nationalists advanced to second place in the 1992 election, they have a long way to go to win a seat that Labour can fully expect to hold.
