Knowsley South is essentially the successor to the old seat of Huyton, which was represented by former Labour leader Harold Wilson. The eastern fringes of Liverpool, which were dominated by comfortable suburbia before the second world war, have since been swamped by extensive peripheral council estates. The constituency contains these areas and also the Ford plant at Halewood and is very solidly Labour in its allegiance. MP Eddie O'Hara will return safely to Westminster.
