Stretching from the east of Leeds city centre to the edge of town, Leeds East presents a cross section of an industrial city, taking in, successively, areas of recent inner-city council blocks, the Victorian housing of Harehills with a large non-white population and serious social problems, extensive council estates and then some areas of owner-occupied suburbia right out on the eastern boundary. The overall profile is firmly towards the lower part of the social scale, and this is a safe Labour seat.
