The 1997 general election should see the West Midlands seat of Meriden vacant, following the recent death of Conservative MP Iain Mills. This constituency, around the south-east side of Birmingham, contains some of Birmingham's most affluent outer suburbs as well as some fairly solidly Labour peripheral council estates. However, the electoral weight of the comfortable suburbs and country areas, plus the long-term effect of council house sales, mean that this unchanged seat should now be safe for the Conservatives.
