Merthyr Tydfil is one of the largest of South Wales' very traditional industrial towns, and the unshaken loyalty of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney to Labour is totally predictable. Both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats struggled to exceed 10 per cent of the vote in 1992. Plaid Cymru currently do even worse, although recent electoral history has seen the Nationalists in second place. Whoever gains the runner-up slot in 1997, they will still be far behind Labour.
