The constituency of Newark in the east of Nottinghamshire, lacks the coal-mining traditions of seats to the west. Newark itself is a mixed light industrial and market town. Together with the surrounding rural countryside and smaller towns, such as Retford and Southwell, the overall picture is one of quiet respectability. It would take a 7.5 per cent swing for Labour to take this seat from the Conservatives, which probably puts it beyond their reach.
