This mixed seat contains both comfortable suburbia and peripheral estates of local authority housing. Prior to the last election the Liberal Democrats did surprisingly well here, but they slipped back to third place behind the Conservatives and Labour in 1992. The balance of voter support favours Labour who now hold the seat quite comfortably. Labour MP, Douglas Henderson, should return safely to parliament in 1997.
