As in many other rural Norfolk seats, Labour had a strong presence here during the 1950s and 1960s. But the unique East Anglian tradition of rural radicalism has been declining steadily since the war, and although it elected a Labour MP in 1945, the Tories won South Norfolk seven consecutive times from then on, albeit with majorities of less than 3,500. Boundary changes in the 1970s, which included Tory boom town of Thetford, inflated that majority to 19,000 and, although Thetford was removed in 1983, the Lib Dems, not Labour, now pose the stronger challenge to sitting MP John MacGregor - but they are a long way behind.
