Nuneaton is essentially an industrial town with coalmining traditions and formerly something of a Labour stronghold. The overall profile of the constituency is mixed, and these days the seat has to be considered marginal. Strong intervention by the Social Democrats let the Conservatives in during the 1980s, and Labour MP Bill Olner only just clawed his way back in 1992. He will expect to be returned in 1997, but this is no longer the safe Labour fiefdom it once was, and will remain a target seat for the Tories.
