If Oxford is a city of 'town and gown', then Oxford East represents Oxford 'town'. The constituency of the university is Oxford West and Abingdon. Here in the east we find the Rover car plant and sprawling council estates. Close in to the city centre is more academic Oxford, but overall the mix of liberal academics and hard-working industrial neighbourhoods swung to Labour in 1992 and seems destined to remain Labour in 1997.
