Industrial Scotland remains an essentially Labour citadel. Paisley North, now grouped with the town of Renfrew and the troubled Linwood car plant, is part of this traditional Labour territory. The main challenge to Labour comes from the Scottish Nationalists, but they are not going to cause Labour any sleepless nights, at least not in 1997.
