Lancashire's South Ribble - named after the river Ribble, whose south bank it hugs, is now on the verge of marginal status. A mixed and interesting seat, it contains the industrial town of Leyland, home of the once British Leyland (now Leyland-DAF) truck and car manufacturer, and many new industrial and housing estates. These are counterbalanced by wide rural Tory flatlands. The towns seem to be in the ascendant - in 1992, Tory Robert Atkins had his majority cut to under 6,000, and a 5 per cent swing would win the seat for Labour. Expect a close contest.
