The constituency of Rushcliffe extends south from the Nottingham city's prosperous southern suburb of West Bridgford, picking up a string of well-to-do small towns and villages, to the county's southern border. With the exception of the former mining community of Cotgrave, there are no major pockets of Labour strength in this seat. Chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke, the most affable and down-to-earth of Tory cabinet ministers, who himself has Nottingham roots, should be safely returned to Westminster.
