Located in traditionally rock-solid Tory North Yorkshire, Ryedale caused a shock in the by-election of May 1986, when the Lib Dems overturned a 16,000 majority and Elizabeth Shields became their only female MP. As is often the case with by-elections, the triumph was short-lived, and Ryedale returned to its old allegiances in the 1987 general election. The Tories have retained a death grip ever since, and sitting member John Greenway's majority will only be reduced because the seat has been shrunk by the Boundary Commission.
